1/9/12 Varanasi

I think it's safe to stay that the journey has officially begun. This morning started off early with a morning flight to Varanasi, the most holy city of the Hindu religion. The city lies about an hour east of Delhi by plane, at the intersection of the Varuna and Asi rivers as they form into the Ganges. The city is said to be founded by Lord Shiva and stands as the city of Lights or e birthplace of spiritual knowledge and education. The city is overcrowded and is facing much congestion due to construction of the newest sewage system since British colonial rule. With that said, the evening boat ride on the Ganges, seeing the Great Crematorium and watching the evening aarti (Hindu prayer ceremony to the mother goddess/Ganges and Lord Shiva) may have been one of the most peaceful moments I've felt. Tomorrow, I'm headed to Sarnath, the place where Buddha gave his first sermons and reached Enlightenment, after a morning tour of Varanasi's holy temples.

Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Shanti.
